The costs of building up GPU expertise
Making software fast takes a lot of time when not experienced. Even with AI, it takes a lot of tries to get even the simple things correct. It’s one of the domains where experience is critical.
Building up a team of GPU-experts is costly, as not everybody who mentions CUDA on their CV can actually develop CUDA-software. Hiring the right people is therefore costly.
The most costs are actually in letting the team go by the end of the difficult part of the work. Most companies only need the expertise temporarily for a few projects, and then switch to maintenance-work. And as those experts are not fit for more easy work, they will get bored and leave, putting the project under stress.
